Multiplex Chains Refuse To Screen Vivek Agnihotri's The Bengal Files In Bengal Under Political Pressure, Makers Allege

Mumbai, September 4 - Director Vivek Agnihotri's much-awaited reality-based political thriller The Bengal Files is facing trouble in getting released in West Bengal amid pressure from the ruling state party, alleges the national award-winning filmmaker. Scheduled to release on September 5, the film presents a storyline focused on the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings and the Noakhali riots, depicting the violence and its aftermath as a genocide, and claiming that these chapters of history were deliberately suppressed or ignored. Ever since the movie was announced, it has been under constant scrutiny for showing the dark truth of Indian history. Now, this scrutiny is leading to the unofficial ban on the film in Bengal, which forced the makers to write an open letter to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, for urgent intervention. Producer of #TheBengalFiles, Pallavi Joshi, writes an open letter to the President of India:URGENT APPEAL:Your Excellency, @rashtrapatibhvn,"As Producer of #TheBengalFiles, I am pained that multiplex chains in Bengal have refused the film’s release under political pressure… pic.twitter.com/ERTLvqxp3y— Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri (@vivekagnihotri) September 4, 2025 In the letter, producer Pallavi Joshi has alleged that theatre chains in West Bengal are refusing to screen the movie under political pressure. Joshi also alleged that she, along with her family, is threatened every day by the workers of the ruling party under Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee. It is worth noting that similar hurdles were also faced by Agnihotri's The Kashmir Files, which some of the states refused to release, but the film went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters of 2022. It needs to be seen how things unfold for The Bengal Files, which carries similarities with TKF. Produced by Abhishek Agarwal Arts and I Am Buddha Productions, the film stars Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, Simrat Kaur, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Namashi Chakraborty, Rajesh Khera, Puneet Issar, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sourav Das, and Mohan Kapur in key roles. Vivek Agnihotri's The Bengal Files Censor Certificate and Record Runtime Revealed

Mumbai, August 27 - National Award-winning filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is all set to release the third instalment and possibly the final film in his acclaimed Files trilogy with The Bengal Files, which releases on September 5. The movie has been making headlines in the media just like the previous films for its political commentary, which has been the hallmark of the franchise. This upcoming film portrays the tragic events surrounding Direct Action Day, also known as the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings on 16 August 1946. Ahead of the film's release, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared the movie, and like The Kashmir Files, it has also got an A certificate. What makes the update even more significant is the film's approved runtime, which is 3 hours and 24 minutes (204 minutes). This not only makes The Bengal Files the longest film in Agnihotri's trilogy, surpassing The Kashmir Files (2 hours 50 minutes) and The Tashkent Files (2 hours 24 minutes), but also positions it among the longest mainstream Hindi films ever released. In recent times, it is easily the longest Bollywood film, beating Ranbir Kapoor's Animal (201 minutes). Given its certification and extended runtime of The Bengal Files, trade experts believe the film is being positioned as an epic-scale socio-political drama meant to leave a lasting impact. Agnihotri, known for his politically charged storytelling, has previously sparked nationwide discussions with his hard-hitting narratives. With The Bengal Files, the director is expected to dive into yet another controversial and emotionally intense chapter of Indian history. Produced by Abhishek Agarwal Arts and I Am Buddha Productions, the movie stars Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi, Simrat Kaur, Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Namashi Chakraborty, Rajesh Khera, Puneet Issar, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sourav Das, and Mohan Kapur in key roles. The Bengal Files Director Vivek Agnihotri Responds Strongly to John Abraham's Criticism of The Kashmir Files

Mumbai, August 22 - National award-winning director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is gearing up for the release of political drama The Bengal Files, which is the third piece in Agnihotri's Files trilogy after National Award-winning movies The Tashkent Files (2019) and The Kashmir Files (2022). The upcoming movie revolves around the Calcutta riots of August 16, 1946, which were triggered after the All-India Muslim League called for Direct Action Day to demand a separate homeland. The movie has been in the media headlines for various reasons, which was expected. Recently, Bollywood star John Abraham shared his opinion on films like The Kashmir Files and Chhaava, and labelled them as the extreme right wing's ideological films, which he said are not good for society. He expressed that he would never make films like The Kashmir Files to "sway people in a hyper-political environment". Abraham's comments left many people furious, including director Agnihotri. During an interview with Padmaja Joshi of NDTV, the filmmaker, who worked with Abraham in 2007's sports drama Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal, reacted to the actor's comment about The Kashmir Files. "John is not a historian, an intellectual, a thinker, or a writer. He has been making very, very jingoistic films like Satyameva Jayate, too. He made Diplomat and all those kinds of films. He must have said that for a variety of reasons. If you had told me some great historian had said this, I would have understood it. I don't care about what he's saying. When was India's atmosphere not hyper-political? When was it that Hindu-Muslim and caste issues never existed in India?" – Agnihotri The filmmaker further said, "He is known for driving motorbikes and showing his body and eating protein, he should focus on those things, film-on mein naa hi ghuse toh behtar hai (better if he doesn't get into talking about films)." Produced by Abhishek Agarwal Arts and I Am Buddha Productions in association with Zee Studios, The Bengal Files stars Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi, Simrat Kaur, Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Namashi Chakraborty, Rajesh Khera, Puneet Issar, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sourav Das, and Mohan Kapur. It is scheduled to release on September 5th. Stay tuned...

Box Office: The Kashmir Files Reaches 250 Crores Net; Becomes 13th Biggest Hindi Movie

Mumbai, April 11 - Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri's all-time blockbuster, "The Kashmir Files" has stormed past the 250 crores net mark and becomes the 13th biggest Hindi grosser of all time. The hard-hitting drama movie, based on true facts, took 32 days to reach the box office milestone. ## "The Kashmir Files" box office run so far has been phenomenal as no one had thought this film would reach this far. It opened with a decent 3.55 crores, but once the public opinion was out, it became unstoppable. The demand for the tickets was such a huge that it even knocked down Prabhas-starrer "Radhe Shyam", and Akshay Kumar's "Bachchhan Paandey" a week later. ## Produced by Abhishek Agarwal in association with Zee Studios and I Am Buddha, TKF's box office run is slowing down with new releases taking the charge, but it has accomplished its job, in fact, it has crossed even the highest of expectations trade had before the release. It currently stands at 250.10 crores. ## Among the biggest Hindi movies of all time at the domestic box office, TKF is at number 3 and is most likely to settle with that. It needs another 21 crores more to topple "Dhoom 3" to become the 12th biggest Hindi movie, but this looks like a Hercules task at this point in time. TKF, however, outscored another all-time blockbuster "URI The Surgical Strike" (244.14 Cr) for the 13th spot. ## Overseas, the Anupam Kher-headed movie has added approx. 45 crores, pushing the worldwide gross cume to 335 crores, becoming the 26th outright Hindi movie worldwide. ## Based on the painful exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits during the Kashmir insurgency, The Kashmir Files stars Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, Chinmay Mandlekar, Prakash Belawadi, Puneet Issar, Bhasha Sumbli, Mrinal Kulkarni, Atul Srivastava, among others in key roles.## Stay tuned...
