Year Ender 2025:The year of Sequels

Sequel Report 2025 Filmmakers doubled down on nostalgia this year, bringing back iconic characters and expanding beloved universes. From the high-octane face-off in War 2 to the supernatural hysteria of Stree 2, the box office was dominated by the Part 2 phenomenon. However, the results were a mixed bag of hits and shocking disasters, proving that a franchise tag alone is no longer a guarantee of success. As we wrap up the year, here is the verified collection report and verdict of the 10 sequels of 2025. War 2 Director Ayan Mukerji Cast Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani Hindi Net ₹ 236.55 Cr WW Gross ₹ 364.35 Cr Budget ₹ 400 Cr Verdict Flop A monumental disappointment. Despite the massive hype surrounding the Hrithik vs. Jr NTR face-off, the film collapsed due to negative word-of-mouth and a weak screenplay. With a colossal budget of ₹400 Cr, the collections are disastrous, failing to even cross the lifetime figures of its 2019 predecessor. It proves that mounting a project on scale alone cannot save a film if the content doesn't connect. Housefull 5 Director Tarun Mansukhani Cast Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan Hindi Net ₹ 183.3 Cr WW Gross ₹ 288.58 Cr Budget ₹ 250 Cr Verdict Average A classic case of the budget outgrowing the box office potential. While the cruise ship grandeur pushed the cost to an astronomical ₹250 Cr, the collections (₹183.3 Cr Net) failed to match up, falling significantly short of Housefull 4's ₹210 Cr benchmark. Despite decent family footfalls during the holidays, the massive mounting turned a potential money-spinner into a financial burden, signaling clear franchise fatigue. Jolly LLB 3 Director Subhash Kapoor Cast Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, Huma Qureshi Hindi Net ₹ 116.75 Cr WW Gross ₹ 170.8 Cr Budget ₹ 120 Cr Verdict Success A classic example of diminishing ROI. While the much-hyped face-off between Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi helped the film match the net collections of Jolly LLB 2 (₹117 Cr), the economics went for a toss. With the budget skyrocketing 4x from ₹30 Cr to ₹120 Cr, what was once a highly profitable franchise has been reduced to just a Success. It proves that while the audience base remained intact, the massive cost escalation ate into the profit margins. Raid 2 Director Raj Kumar Gupta Cast Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Vaani Kapoor Hindi Net ₹ 173.05 Cr WW Gross ₹ 237 Cr Budget ₹ 120 Cr Verdict Hit Bigger numbers, but smaller margins. While Raid 2 saw a healthy jump in collections (₹173 Cr vs the prequel's ₹103 Cr), it couldn't match the massive profitability of the first part. Raid was a 'Super-Hit' because it earned 3x its lean ₹35 Cr budget. The sequel, burdened by a heavy ₹120 Cr cost, settles for a Hit verdict. It was a commercial success, but not the money-spinner the original was relative to investment. Sitaare Zameen Par Director R.S. Prasanna Cast Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh Hindi Net ₹ 167.3 Cr WW Gross ₹ 267.34 Cr Budget ₹ 122 Cr Verdict Hit A case of High Revenue, Lower ROI. While Sitaare Zameen Par clocked an impressive ₹167.3 Cr (nearly 2.6x the prequel's lifetime), the economics tell a different story. With the budget escalating 10x from ₹12 Cr to ₹122 Cr, the massive profitability of the original is missing. However, given the genre and Aamir's recent track record, crossing ₹267 Cr worldwide makes it a respectable Hit, even if it lacks the Super-Hit status of its low-budget predecessor. De De Pyaar De 2 Director Anshul Sharma Cast Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, Rakul Preet Singh Hindi Net ₹ 74 Cr WW Gross ₹ 111.5 Cr Budget ₹ 150 Cr Verdict Below Average A shocking misfire. Sequels are expected to take the franchise forward, but De De Pyaar De 2 took a massive step back. Not only did the collections nosedive from ₹104 Cr (Part 1) to just ₹74 Cr, but the budget ballooned to ₹135 Cr, making theatrical recovery impossible. Son of Sardaar 2 Director Vijay Kumar Arora Cast Ajay Devgn, Mrunal Thakur, Sanjay Dutt Hindi Net ₹ 46.82 Cr WW Gross ₹ 65.75 Cr Budget ₹ 130 Cr Verdict Flop A box office catastrophe. The franchise completely collapsed with this installment. While the original was a Super-Hit with ₹105 Cr Net on a lean ₹40 Cr budget, the sequel saw the budget triple to ₹130 Cr while collections crashed to less than half (₹46.82 Cr). It stands as one of the biggest loss-makers of the year, proving that a 13-year gap is too long to sustain brand recall without strong content. Baaghi 4 Director A. Harsha Cast Tiger Shroff, Sara Ali Khan Hindi Net ₹ 52.1 Cr WW Gross ₹ 77 Cr Budget ₹ 80 Cr Verdict Flop The franchise has officially hit rock bottom. While Baaghi 3 managed ₹96.5 Cr even amidst the onset of the pandemic, Baaghi 4 saw collections crash by nearly 50% to just ₹52.1 Cr. Even with a reduced budget of ₹80 Cr, the film failed to recover its costs theatrically. The repetitive action formula has been completely rejected by the audience. Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 Director Anukalp Goswami Cast Kapil Sharma, Warina Hussain,Tridha Choudhary, Ayesha Khan Hindi Net ₹ 7.20 Cr(As of day 3) WW Gross NA Budget ₹30 Cr Verdict NA Kapil Sharma's return to the big screen witnessed some respite over the weekend. After a slow start, the film saw positive growth on Sunday (₹ 2.85 Cr), taking its 3-day total to ₹ 7.20 Cr. While family audiences stepped out, the numbers still pale in comparison to the record-breaking debut of the first part. The film has gathered some momentum, but it now faces the crucial Monday test to see if it can sustain its run and challenge the lifetime collections of its prequel. Kesari Chapter 2 Director Karan Singh Tyagi Cast Akshay Kumar, Ananya Panday Hindi Net ₹ 92.73 Cr WW Gross ₹ 145 Cr Budget ₹ 150 Cr Verdict Average A failed attempt to capitalize on patriotism. While the original Kesari was a Hit earning ₹155.70 Cr Net on a controlled ₹100 Cr budget, the sequel stumbled significantly. With the production cost escalating to ₹150 Cr, the collections dropped by over 40% (₹92.73 Cr Net). Despite recovering ₹34.25 Cr from overseas markets, the film could not overcome its high budget, ending as a major commercial disappointment. Masti 4 Director Milap Zaveri Cast Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani, Riteish Deshmukh Hindi Net ₹ 14.9 Cr WW Gross ₹ 19.25 Cr Budget ₹ 40 Cr Verdict Flop The franchise remains stuck in a rut. Masti 4 has virtually mirrored the disastrous performance of its prequel, Great Grand Masti (₹13.72 Cr). With collections stagnating around the ₹15 Cr mark against a ₹40 Cr budget, it confirms that the adult-comedy genre in this format has lost its theatrical appeal. It marks a second consecutive failure for the once-popular series.

De De Pyaar De 2 Collection: Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh's Rom-Com Tops 100 Crore Worldwide

Mumbai, November 25 - Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh-fronted romantic comedy De De Pyaar De 2 has topped the 100 crore worldwide mark, a decent milestone at the global box office. Directed by Anshul Sharma, DDPD2 took 12 days to go past the century mark worldwide. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) While entering the 100-crore club is always noteworthy for a rom-com, the overall performance of the sequel is being viewed as satisfactory rather than impressive, especially considering the expectations attached to the brand value of the first film. The film opened on a modest note, and though it picked up over the weekend, the growth wasn't strong enough to signal a major blockbuster run. Gradual progress over the weekdays and a steady second weekend helped the film push its worldwide gross to over 100 crore, allowing it to just about cross the benchmark. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) At the domestic box office, DDPD2 has grossed approximately 77.50 crores in 12 days, which also reflects the mixed trend — not a failure, but far from the commanding numbers expected from a franchise-driven urban entertainer. Overseas, the film has posted around 22.50 crores so far to take its global tally past 100 crores. Despite this, De De Pyaar De 2 remains a fairly acceptable box-office outing, buoyed by family audiences. Overall, the film's entry into the 100 crore worldwide club is a decent achievement, but the verdict remains clear — the result is not extraordinary, merely satisfactory, and certainly below what trade circles had anticipated before release. De De Pyaar De 2 Shows Good Hold at Box Office, Grosses Over ₹68 Crore Worldwide in 5 Days

The romantic comedy De De Pyaar De 2, starring Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, and Rakul Preet Singh, has shown a Noteworthy performance at the box office, collecting ₹44.25 crore net in India within its first five days of release. The film, which is a sequel to the 2019 hit "De De Pyaar De," had a decent opening weekend but saw a significant drop on its first Monday. The film kicked off its theatrical run with an opening day collection of ₹8.75 crore. It witnessed a significant jump over the weekend, earning ₹12.25 crore on Saturday and ₹13.75 crore on Sunday. However, collections saw a dip on Monday, bringing in ₹4.25 crore. The film then saw a slight increase on Tuesday, collecting ₹5.25 crore. Early estimates for Wednesday suggest a collection of around ₹1.59 crore. De De Pyaar De 2 is a romantic comedy directed by Anshul Sharma and written by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain. It is produced by T-Series Films and Luv Films. The film continues the story of Ashish Mehra (Ajay Devgn) and his younger girlfriend Ayesha Khurana (Rakul Preet Singh). In this installment, Ashish decides to meet Ayesha's family to get their approval, leading to a comedic conflict with her father, played by R. Madhavan. The original 2019 film, De De Pyaar De, was directed by Akiv Ali and also starred Tabu alongside Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh. It was a commercial success, grossing over ₹143 crore worldwide. The sequel has received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Reviewers have praised the performances of the lead cast, particularly the face-off between Ajay Devgn and R. Madhavan. The film has been described as a breezy and enjoyable take on modern relationships, with a good dose of humor. Some critics, however, found the story to be stretched at times. The direction by Anshul Sharma and the writing by Luv Ranjan have been noted for attempting to explore themes of ageism, patriarchy, and family dynamics within a comedic framework. Take a look at De De Pyaar De 2 Day-Wise Box Office Collection Day 1 [1st Friday]: ₹ 8.75 Cr Day 2 [1st Saturday]: ₹ 12.25 Cr Day 3 [1st Sunday]: ₹ 13.75 Cr Day 4 [1st Monday]: ₹ 4.25 Cr Day 5 [1st Tuesday]: ₹ 5.25 Cr Day 6 [1st Wednesday]: ₹ 1.59 Cr (Early Estimates) Total (5 Days): ₹ 44.25 Cr While De De Pyaar De 2 has put up a respectable total so far, its opening day collection of ₹8.75 crore is slightly lower than its predecessor, De De Pyaar De, which opened at ₹10.41 crore in 2019. Despite the strong weekend growth, the film's ability to sustain its momentum during the weekdays will be crucial in determining its overall box office success. The performance in its second week will be the real test for the film and will indicate its potential for a long and successful theatrical run.

De De Pyaar De vs De De Pyaar De 2 Opening Weekend Comparison: Ajay Devgn-Starrer Sequel Trails Behind Original

Mumbai, November 18 - Bollywood star Ajay Devgn's latest romantic comedy De De Pyaar De 2 has wrapped up its first weekend with a decent performance, earning around 35 crores net collection. But the sequel has fallen short of the mark set by the original film. The Anshul Sharma's directorial managed to cross the 30 crore mark due to decent growth over the weekend after an average opening. In comparison, the new instalment has fallen short of the original film's opening weekend collection, which had registered approximately 38.50 crore net in its first three days. While the film managed to stay steady after a modest opening day, the growth over the weekend wasn't strong enough to surpass the expectations set by its predecessor. The 2019 release benefited from fresher appeal and strong audience word of mouth, whereas the sequel might be dealing with franchise fatigue as well as reluctant promotion. Despite the performance gap, De De Pyaar De 2 still has a chance to pick up momentum in the coming weekdays. Strong hold in key metros and sustained audience interest in the rom-com genre could help the film achieve respectable numbers in the long run. However, at this stage, the comparison clearly favours the first film, and all eyes are now on how well the sequel can maintain its pace to stay in contention for a solid lifetime total. De De Pyaar De 2 Day 3 Early Estimates: Ajay Devgn-starrer Ends Opening Weekend On Positive Note

Mumbai, November 16 - Ajay Devgn's much-awaited romantic comedy De De Pyaar De 2, co-starring Rakul Preet Singh and R. Madhavan, has wrapped up its opening weekend on a reasonably positive note at the domestic box office with good collection on Sunday. While the film didn't witness a bumper start, the steady upward trend has given it a decent platform as it steps into the crucial weekday phase. After opening to around 8.75 crore net, a slow beginning for a sequel backed by a major star presence, De De Pyaar De 2 managed to recover some lost ground on its second day with a 40% jump, earning around 12.25 crore net on Saturday. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The momentum continued on Sunday as well, with the film showcasing around 15% growth, bringing in an estimated 13.50-14 crore net. With this, the opening weekend total stands at a decent 35 crore net, positioning the movie on a fair note despite the shaky start. A better opening could have given a strong platform for the film to end the first weekend on a strong note, but still, it is a decent total given fatigue around franchise films. Now, all eyes shift to Monday — a decisive day that will determine whether the film can translate its weekend trajectory into long-term success. For De De Pyaar De 2 to emerge as a clean commercial winner, it must maintain a strong hold during the working days and avoid major drops. The opening may not have met pre-release expectations, but the weekend trend definitely keeps the film alive in the race. A stable Monday could well mark the film's journey toward success — but a sharp fall could make the run difficult. Stay tuned...

De De Pyaar De 2 Day 1 Early Estimates: Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh-starrer Opens On Expected Lines

Mumbai, November 14 - The much-awaited romantic comedy sequel De De Pyaar De 2, starring Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh, and R. Madhavan, has taken a decent start on the expected lines at the domestic box office. According to early estimates, DDPD2 has opened in the range of 8-9 crores net collection, which is very much in line with pre-release expectations. A double-digit start for the film would have been ideal, but not so good pre-sales indicated that it would require extraordinary word of mouth to reach there, which didn't happen. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The movie was lacking the buzz which is required for a solid opening; however, the makers failed to maintain it after the well-received trailer. Given the sequel tag, the opening of DDPD2 is below par, as the first film opened to over 10 crores net in 2019. As said, the opening is still not something which can be called bad, and has comfortably beaten the opening of Ajay Devgn's last movie, Son of Sardaar 2 (7.25 crores net). The film has a chance to bounce back strongly on Saturday and Sunday, especially with hardly any competition at the moment. The weekend collection of DDPD2 will aim to reach around 30 crores net, which is, even though not a good total, but will be respectable. As always, the film's fate will be known by Monday, as it may emerge as a decent success if the film manages to hold well during working days. Stay tuned...

De De Pyaar De 2 Box Office Preview/Opening Day Expectations: Word of Mouth Is Key For Ajay Devgn-Starrer

Mumbai, November 13: Ajay Devgn's much-awaited romantic comedy De De Pyaar De 2 is all set to arrive in cinemas this Friday, aiming to recreate the charm of its 2019 predecessor, which became a box office hit with a worldwide collection of around 150 crores. Directed by Anshul Sharma, the sequel marks Ajay Devgn's return to the romantic comedy space after a gap, pairing him once again with Rakul Preet Singh, and R. Madhavan joins the cast in a key role, among others. The film has been certified U/A by the CBFC with an approved runtime of 2 hours and 27 minutes, making it a family-friendly entertainer targeted at multiplex audiences. De De Pyaar De 2 buzz has been a mixed bag. After a widely appreciated trailer, the makers failed to build the buzz, which now seems to be hit and miss. The advance booking, which opened a couple of days before the release, has been lukewarm but did witness some momentum on the last day. Also read - OTT Releases This Week Nov 10 to Nov 17 - Dude, Telusu Kada, K-ramp, Dashavatar, and More The film's final pre-sales are in the range of recently released Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, which is of the same genre. SSKTK opened to close to a double-digit start. Here, DDPD2 also has the franchise factor, although it didn't help much in pre-sales, but is expected to receive some boost in spot bookings. The franchise fatigue, however, is real, and that might overpower the overall franchise value if reviews are not favourable. Considering these factors, DDPD2 is expected to open in the range of 8-10 crores net. It is believed and also suggested by the pre-sales trend that the movie's overall box office performance will heavily depend on word of mouth, especially given its genre and target audience. The original DDPD took in 10.40 crores net (including previews), and if the reviews are extremely positive, the sequel might challenge this opening start. One of the big positives for De De Pyaar De 2 is the limited competition at the box office this weekend. With no major releases lined up, the film has a clear run and could benefit from family crowds and walk-in audiences, particularly in urban centres. All eyes are now on audience reactions post-release, as positive buzz could help the film build strong momentum over the weekend and turn into another success story for Ajay Devgn. Stay tuned...

De De Pyaar De 2 Takes the Spotlight as New Films Hit Theatres This Week

This week’s Hindi line-up may be lighter than usual, but it still brings an interesting mix of genres to theatres. While De De Pyaar De 2 headlines the lineup with Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, and Rakul Preet Singh, films like 2020 Delhi, Kaal Trighori, and Agra add variety with their distinct stories and tones. It’s not a packed release window, but there’s a fair bit of range for audiences looking for something new. The weekend clearly belongs to De De Pyaar De 2, but the other titles could surprise with their storytelling and performances. Whether you’re in the mood for a star-studded rom-com or something more experimental, it’s a good weekend for moviegoers to explore different worlds under one marquee.
