Surprise Hits of 2025: Low To Mid-Budget Films That Emerged as Winners at the Indian Box Office

Mumbai, August 19 - The year 2025 has been full of surprises at the Indian box office, and there are still five months left. Amid the frenzy of big-budget spectacles in 2025, a group of low to mid budget budget films stunned everyone by not only becoming critical successes but also box office winners. These films, spanning multiple languages and genres, didn't have the advantage of huge star power or massive marketing campaigns. Instead, they relied on storytelling, originality, and strong word-of-mouth to win hearts. Saiyaara (Hindi – Romantic Drama) - No one expected a debutant-led love story to become the biggest romantic hit in years, but Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda's chemistry, Mohit Suri's direction, and Mithoon's soulful music turned Saiyaara into a cultural phenomenon. Made on a budget of around 60 crores, the movie started strongly and exploded eventually as the week progressed, becoming the first Hindi romantic film to cross 300 crores net. Mahavatar Narsimha (Hindi – Animated Devotional Action Drama) - An animated retelling of the Narsimha avatar from the Puranas, Mahavatar Narsimha emerged as a surprise family favourite. Released with little hype and almost zero expectations, it tapped into the growing demand for Indian devotional content. Made on a budget of around 5-10 crores, the film's strong visuals and devotional storytelling led it to cross the 100 crore mark in just 10 days, making it the first Indian animated movie to achieve the feat. Dragon (Tamil – Coming-of-age Comedy Drama) - Starring Pradeep Ranganathan, Dragon is the biggest Tamil blockbuster of the year. It is a story about a college dropout who deceptively secures a high-paying job, but is forced to accept a major challenge to avoid being exposed. Made on a budget of around 20 crores, the movie went on to gross around 120 crores in India, as one of the highest-grossing Tamil titles of the year. Tourist Family (Tamil – Comedy Drama) - It is being hailed as one of the most heartwarming stories of the year. The story follows a Sri Lankan Tamil family who, following the Sri Lankan economic crisis, arrive in India in search of a better future. It was made on a budget of around 5 crores, and went on to gross over 70 crores in India, and became a big blockbuster. It is already the highest-grossing Kannada movie of the year with a domestic gross collection of over 50 crores, against the budget of around 4 crores. Thalaivan Thalaivii (Tamil – Romantic Action Comedy) - Starring Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, the film became another modest-budgeted Tamil box office hit of the year. It reportedly cost 25 crores the make, and it has already grossed around 60 crores domestically and is still going strong. Alappuzha Gymkhana (Malayalam – Sports Drama) - Directed by Khalid Rahman and starring Naslen among others, it is a story of a group of students, who, after failing exams, try entering college through sports quotas, picking boxing. They luck through district matches, but face uncertainty at higher competition levels. It was a success at the box office, grossing over 50 crores in India, against the budget of around 10 crores. F1 (Hollywood – Sports Drama) - Brad Pitt's F1, directed by Joseph Kosinski (of Top Gun: Maverick fame), was expected to perform well globally — but what surprised trade analysts was its exceptional run in India. Despite being a niche sports film centred on Formula 1 racing, F1 resonated with Indian audiences, thanks to sleek visuals, thrilling race sequences, and Brad Pitt's enduring star power. It grossed around 115 crores in India, emerging as one of the highest-grossing original Hollywood films. Stay tuned...

Box Office: Brad Pitt's 'F1 Movie' Crosses 100 Crore Gross In India; Races Past $450 Million Worldwide

Mumbai, July 21 - Hollywood star Brad Pitt has pulled off a cinematic masterstroke with his racing sports drama F1 Movie, which has crossed the 100 crore gross milestone at the Indian box office. Despite fierce competition from Yash Raj Films' Saiyaara, which has taken the box office by storm, F1 remained solid in its fourth week so far. ## A Surprising Success Story ## Directed by Joseph Kosinski, F1 released with moderate buzz but has far exceeded expectations with its remarkable box office run. Before Saiyaara, the film was already facing intense competition from Hollywood blockbusters like Jurassic World Rebirth and Superman, as well as major Indian titles. Yet, F1 managed to do the unthinkable and is now racing into the 100 crore gross club. ## F1 enters 100 crores gross club in 26 days ## After the fourth weekend (24 days) at the Indian box office, F1 scored approximately 98 crore gross ($11.4 million). By its 26th day — the fourth Tuesday — the film officially joined the elite 100 crore gross club, becoming only the third Hollywood film in 2025 to do so, after Jurassic World Rebirth and Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning. ## Notably, F1 is one of the rare Hollywood titles to earn (so far) nearly 15 times its opening day collection, making it one of the most impressive box office success stories of the year in the country. ## F1 surpassed $450 million at the worldwide box office ## The Warner Bros. production has been a hit globally, racing past $450 million in worldwide grosses after its fourth weekend. The domestic (North American) gross stands at $153.6 million, while the overseas earnings have reached $307.2 million — taking the global total to a stunning $460.8 million.## China is the biggest international market for F1 with $45.5 million, followed by the United Kingdom with $24.6 million, France with $20.8 million, Mexico with $17.4 million, and Australia with $15.2 million. India too was among the top 10 overseas markets for the film, taking 8th spot on the list. ## About F1 Movie ## The film stars Brad Pitt as a racing driver who returns to Formula One (F1) after a 30-year absence to save his former teammate's underdog team, APXGP, from collapse. Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem star in supporting roles. ## Stay tuned...

Box Office: 'F1 Movie' Nears $300 Million Worldwide; Races Past 50 Crore In India

Los Angeles, July 7 - Brad Pitt's high-octane racing sports drama F1: The Movie is continuing to impress at the global box office, and has proved to be a sleeper hit for Apple Studios. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the movie is nearing the $300 million milestone, marking a major win for original Hollywood content in 2025. ## Domestic, overseas, and worldwide collection ## In 10 days so far, F1 has generated $293.5 million worldwide, including $109.5 million at the domestic (North America) box office and $184 million overseas over 71 markets. The movie was reportedly made on a budget of around $200 million. ## Biggest hit for Apple, and the biggest racing original film ## F1 has become the highest-grossing worldwide grosser for Apple, beating Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" ($221 million worldwide). It is, however, worth noting that Apple's theatrical slate isn't as vast as other studios, as it has only released five so far, also including "Killers of the Flower Moon" ($158 million), "Fly Me to the Moon" ($42 million) and "Argylle" ($96 million). ## F1, meanwhile, has outgrossed the entire worldwide theatrical box office run of Twentieth Century Fox Studios' "Ford v Ferrari" ($225.50 million worldwide) to become the biggest racing original film. "Ford v Ferrari", however, is currently ahead of "F1" in the domestic market after 10 days. ## What is India collection of F1 movie ## In India, where the love for Formula 1 is steadily rising, the film has managed to cross ₹50 crore gross, a remarkable feat for a non-franchise international release. With strong word of mouth and continued interest from metro audiences, F1 put up a solid performance in the second weekend to gross around 18 crores, dropping just 30% from the opening frame. ## The film has not just sustained its momentum but accelerated over the weekdays — a rare occurrence in the current box office landscape. Released on June 28, F1 enjoyed a powerful opening weekend of ₹25.50 crore gross in India, and it has maintained a steady hold across its second week. After 10 days, it has managed to gross around 60.50 crores ($7+ million) in the country, making it a solid success for the involved parties. ## About the movie ## The film stars Brad Pitt as a retired driver making a sensational comeback, and features real F1 circuits, actual race footage, and cameos from top drivers, all of which have thrilled motorsport fans. The combination of Hollywood star power, top-tier direction, and authentic F1 appeal is fueling the movie’s strong theatrical run. ## As it edges closer to the $300M benchmark, F1 is not only a commercial victory but also a potential awards-season contender in the technical categories, especially for sound design, editing, and cinematography, based on the reception from critics. ## Stay tuned...

Box Office: Brad Pitt's 'F1' Scores A Very Good First Week In India

Mumbai, July 4 - Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt's latest racing sports drama F1 has hit the ground running at the Indian box office, delivering a strong first-week gross collection of over ₹40 crore. The film, directed by Top Gun: Maverick helmer Joseph Kosinski, has become one of the highest first-week performers for an original Hollywood release in India. ## After a solid opening weekend that brought in around ₹25.50 crore gross, F1 maintained its momentum through the weekdays. Remarkably, the film saw minimal to no drops from Monday to Thursday, wrapping up the week with a total gross in the ₹42–43 crore range (₹35–36 crore net) across all languages. ## The IMAX was the clear preferred choice of the Indian audience for the movie, which accounted for approximately 30% of the total collections. The original English version, in particular, drove strong footfalls in premium screens. ## F1 faces a reduction in screen count heading into its second weekend, due to the arrival of big new releases like Jurassic World Rebirth, but it has managed to retain all IMAX screens. That's a big win, especially since the Jurassic World sequel isn't releasing in the IMAX format. ## Backed by strong word-of-mouth and positive audience reception, F1 is expected to hold firm in its second weekend. It is expected to be around ₹60 crore gross (₹50 crore net) by the end of the second weekend, which is an excellent result for a niche, motorsport-centric film in the Indian market. ## Stay tuned...
